Each series has a common theme but every print is individual and unique.

Producing a collograph print involves making a printing plate from collaged materials of different textures. The plate is a piece of stiff card which has various materials and textures glued to its surface. This is then sealed in a shellac varnish and when dry, ink is applied to the plate by different methods using intaglio and relief inks. Another way of adding additional colour and texture is by using chin colle. This is coloured tissue paper of various thicknesses and pattern which can be torn and glued via the press onto the paper together with the inked up collograph plate.

Linocut is another form of relief printing where marks are cut from the surface of the lino plate. Ink is then rolled over the remaining surface which then prints the area of colour that has not been cut away (i.e.the negative image). Areas can be cut from the plate at various stages of the printing process so that colours from previous layers can overlap and show through.

With linocut I sometimes use two different sized plates together – one was half the size of the other. By turning the plates around and combining them in different ways created lots of different effects. Often I start off with a simple idea and build up layers of colour. It is experimentation with an element of surprise as I work quite quickly with lots of prints on the go.
